A VOLUNTEER who has driven more than 20,000 miles to help elderly and disabled people get out and about has had his efforts recognised by a Euro MP.

Albert Reid, 72, of Thomas Road, Clacton, was one of ten drivers at Helping Hands to receive a certificate from East of England Labour MEP Richard Howitt.

Mr Reid has racked up more than ten years’ service.

Mr Reid, chairman of the trustees, said: “There are a lot of people who can’t get out and everyone says they don’t know what they would do without us.

“It’s a bit of a lifeline for the drivers as well.

“It gives us something to do, gets us out and it’s enjoyable too.”

Helping Hands provides transport to appointments, shopping and family visits for over-sixties and the disabled, charging only fuel costs.

The charity has been running for more than three decades, but is facing a £30,000 funding shortfall this year, meaning it may have to offer a reduced service.

Mr Howitt presented the certificates as part of a wider campaign to support voluntary work during the European Year of Volunteering.

He said: “A small investment in a charity like Helping Hands brings a big return as it allows volunteers to donate their time to help others.

“This is a massive achievement and I congratulate everyone involved.”

David Wright, Tony Gibbs, Glen Hazelwood, Eileen Brown, Stephen Brown, Gordon Bennett, Hazel Beckham, Jean Burwood and John Cubitt also received certificates.
