AN elderly driver whose car veered off the road and fatally injured a teenager in Colchester town centre has died.

Cassie McCord, 16, of Drury Road, Colchester, died of serious head injuries suffered in the crash outside H&M, in Head Street, on February 7.

Driver Colin Horsfall, 87, from Rowhedge, was taken to hospital after the crash and remained there for weeks before being moved to a care home.

Police have not revealed if Mr Horsfall, who died on Friday, was ever well enough to be interviewed about the incident.

A police spokesman said: “Mr Horsfall was driving a Vauxhall car that left the road and mounted the pavement, injuring three girls, one of them fatally.

“Police investigating the crash are continuing to prepare a report for the coroner for an inquest, which will be held in due course.

“The McCord family and several witnesses have been informed by police of the man’s death.”

Following the incident, it emerged Mr Horsfall had been involved in an accident at a petrol station days earlier and was set to have his licence revoked. He was still allowed to get behind the wheel of his red Vauxhall Astra on the day of the fatal collision because he had not received the revocation notice from the DVLA.

Cassie, a Colchester Sixth Form College student, was taken to Queen’s Hospital, in Romford. But her life-support machine was switched off on February 9.
