HISTORY enthusiasts took the chance to get a rare glimpse of the remains of a 900-year-old abbey.
Colchester Archaeological Trust held an open day, after spending a fortnight digging trenches in the grounds of the former Colchester Garrison Officers’ Club, which was destroyed in a blaze last July.
They found remains of the foundations of the former Abbey of St John, built between 1095 and 1115, and destroyed on the order of King Henry VIII.
The trust held an open day to discuss the findings, including the foundations of the nave at the western end of the abbey church.
Club members are working with architects to draw up plans to replace the 125-year-old building above the remains.
