MORE than 120 motorists have been fined for speeding in Essex in the past month.

Essex Police launched its anti-speeding campaign in January to follow its drink-drive operation over the festive period.

A total of 121 drivers were fined and another 68 were offered and chose to take part in speed awareness training instead. An additional 92 were given verbal warnings.

The highest speed recorded in a 30mph speed limit was 59mph in Braintree.

Adam Pipe, Essex Police’s casualty reduction manager, said: “It’s disappointing to see some drivers continue to drive irresponsibly on the roads of Essex.

“Residents continue to tell us speeding is a concern in their communities, but this campaign shows we are still seeing a number of people putting themselves and others in danger by driving at excess speed.”

Essex Police’s drink-drive campaign, between December 1 and January 1, saw 5,279 motorists stopped and breathalysed.

Of those, 181 – 3.4 per cent – tested positive for being above the legal drink-drive limit.
