HOMEOWNERS want their property protected from an accident hotspot in an “exceptionally” dangerous road.

Jen Brignell, 47, of Oak Road, Rivenhall, claimed there is an average of two serious accidents along the road each year.

Traffic is able to turn off the A12 into Oak Road, but the speed limit drops from 70mph to 30mph within the space of a short slip road.

Mrs Brignell said: “You take your life in your hands on this corner. It is exceptionally dangerous.

“From the A12, the corner comes up on you very quickly and Oak Road is very narrow.

“If you get two lorries, they physically can’t pass and the cars come round, but they are invariably still going at about 60mph as it is such a short slip road.

“I look at this on a daily basis and wonder how there are not more accidents.”

Mrs Brignell and her husband, Gary, recently had two cars written off after a driver smashed through a wall onto their drive.

She said: “You hear this massive bang and think, ‘well, that is another one’.

“We have lived here four and a half years and these accidents have happened at least four or five times.”

Mrs Brignell said she would welcome a barrier to protect residents’ properties or perhaps a speed camera on the slip road.

Rivenhall Parish Council clerk Keith Taylor said: “We are aware of the problem and the Highways Agency is looking to improve the road in 2012 or 2013.

“Everybody you ask in Oak Road would say it is quite dangerous.”
