CARNIVAL party-goers will be encouraged to make this year’s procession as colourful and loud as possible.

Organisers of Colchester Carnival have decided to give it a modern twist with music and dancing through the streets on July 16.

Residents told a public meeting they wanted the occasion to have maximum colour and noise.

Dan Woodruff, on the organising committee for Colchester Round Table, said: “We want this year’s carnival to be as vibrant as possible with the community at the heart of it.

“We thought it might not be possible to get a theme together in time for this year, but people said they just wanted an emphasis on colour and noise, so that’s what we’ve gone with.

“It gives the carnival a modern twist rather than being a more conservative procession, and it will give everyone a chance to really get involved. That’s what we’re aiming to achieve, a real community-centred event.”

Community groups and schools will be given free entry in the procession to encourage as many as possible to take part.

Businesses can enter for a nominal fee on the condition they get into the “carnival spirit”, said Mr Woodruff.

Jamie Hooper, who is overseeing the preparations, added: “We’re getting very good feedback and support from people who want to see the carnival be a real success and that’s so encouraging.

“The level of interest people have shown is certainly very promising. All in all it’s looking good and hopefully things will continue to progress as we get nearer the date.”

As well as the main procession, there are family events planned in Castle Park during the day and a party after the parade.

The group is holding a series of public meetings for those who want to help. The next one will be at 7.30pm, on February 26, at the Colchester Karate Academy, Unit E2 of the Cowdray Centre.
