A MUM is unhappy with a supermarket’s response after a display stand toppled onto her young son.

Two customers and a Tesco employee had to lift the empty metal shelving unit off Kieran Bonass, seven, who suffered a bump to the head.

Mum Amanda Bonass, of Russet Close, Braintree, said: “We were standing at the self-service checkout in a queue.

“He must have been resting where the tomato stand was. The next thing I knew he was covered in it.”

A worker at the store in Market Place, Braintree, helped to lift it off Kieran, but then left, claimed Mrs Bonass.

She said: “Kieran was complaining his head hurt, so I went to customer services. There was no first aider in the shop and no-one offered a cold compress.”

However, Tesco has said there was a first aider but Mrs Bonass had declined treatment for Kieran.

She took him home and returned to the store the next day to record the incident in the accident book, but was told she could not.

“They said they have been to told by head office that if it’s not filled out on the day, you have to contact head office,” said Mrs Bonass, 35.

“When I phoned head office, they said the opposite – they said I had 72 hours.”

Mrs Bonass returned to the store and the accident report was eventually filled out, after she spoke to several people. She said: “I was really disgusted by the service.”

A Tesco spokesman said: “Fortunately, the young boy was unharmed after the incident in store on December 27.

“There was a first aider on duty in the store, but his mother decided her son didn’t require any treatment.

“Accidents should be logged promptly after they have happened in store, then and there, rather than in hindsight.

“It’s important that the person involved is there to report it.”
