Shocked U's fans have reacted angrily to a big increase in ticket prices at Layer Road.
Many season ticket-holders claim they will have to pay more than 50 per cent more to watch Colchester United next season.
Some say they can't afford the rise, which will see the most expensive season tickets costing nearly £440.
Supporters accused the newly-promoted club of "holding fans to ransom".
One season ticket-holder told the Evening Gazette: "If that's the price of promotion, they can keep it. I can't afford to take my two kids any more. It would cost us over £600."
However, many supporters say the new charges were expected and are still cheaper than many League One grounds, a division below Colchester.
Club spokesman Matt Hudson said the U's had to increase prices to give them a chance of staying in the Championship.
"It is a massive jump up in terms of league status and we have to compete next year," he said.
