Southend airport is ready for take-off in 2006 following a 40% increase in business aviation in 2005 and the landing of the 2012 Olympics for London.

The airport is keen to attract commercial operators and create a business aviation centre of excellence on site. It is already the base for companies specialising in aircraft maintenance, aircraft painting and interior refurbishment.

In 2005 Southend announced plans to invest £25 million in a new passenger terminal and train station using the existing rail link on its eastern boundary for a direct route to London Liverpool street station.

The news that the 2012 Olympics will be held in London is seen as another major boost for the airport.

Southend airport director, Bruce Campbell says he has been delighted with the level of support for the airport's planned expansion among local businesses and the public.

Mr Campbell said: "We are confident of announcing new airline partners in 2006. Flybe will be resuming its scheduled summer programme to Jersey from April, and has also pledged more routes in the future and we are talking to several more airlines and a number of business aviation companies. Undoubtedly, the fact that the Olympics is coming to London will generate significant more interest in London Southend Airport."

London Southend Airport is privately owned by Regional Airports Ltd, which also owns London Biggin Hill and is responsible for the passenger handling at RAF Northolt.
