Commuters faced delays when major signalling problems caused rail chaos.

All train services between Colchester and Clacton were suspended until further notice shortly before noon yesterday.

It meant people travelling on trains between the two towns and to Thorpe, Frinton and Walton were advised to add an extra 60 minutes to their journey time.

A replacement bus service operated between Colchester and Clacton.

A spokesman from Network Rail, which is in charge of signalling, said the problem had been caused by a power failure.

Engineering works sorted the problem at about 1.15pm, restoring the power supply.

But commuters were warned to expect a delay of about 15 minutes until later in the afternoon.
