A trio of Basildon Rugby Club girls have just returned home from England under-19 trials in Birmingham.

Sarah Howard, 18, plus Holly Le Grave and Katherine Emerson, both 17, impressed under the watchful eyes of the selectors and hope to get a call up to the national squad in October.

All three girls have been playing the sport since they were 10/11-years-old and also represent Essex and the Eastern Counties teams as well as their club side Basildon.

Le Grave has been the Eastern team captain since she was 14 - the youngest person ever to be given the armband.

And her team mate Emerson was voted Thurrock's Young Sports Personality of the Year.

Le Grave has also been nominated by the Essex RFU for an award for her special needs rugby coaching and has won the title Young Volunteer of the Year.

She has also received a £1,000 RFUW grant as part of the Talented Athletes Scholarship Scheme to help her continued progress in the sport.
