A man who suffered from multiple sclerosis for 30 years died after asking his carer to leave two pill bottles under his pillow.

Eugene Stolworthy, 57, died from drug poisoning at his home in Trottersfield, Braintree, in March this year.

An inquest at Chelmsford Coroner's Court yesterday heard Mr Stolworthy, also know as Louie, was found face down on his bed with pill bottles next to him.

Darren Stolworthy said his father was diagnosed with MS aged 27 but had never suggested he might take his own life.

However carer Joan Skingsley, who was on holiday when he died, said she was not surprised.

"I suppose I always knew he wouldn't wait until the very end," she told the inquest.

Community nurse Susan Olley visited Mr Stolworthy the night before he was found. He asked her to get him various tablets. He also asked for some other pills which she was wary about giving him because they were in an unlabelled bottle.

Mr Stolworthy told her he knew what they were for and how many to take, and she put both bottles under his pillow.

A post-mortem examination gave the cause of death as Coproxamol and Zopiclone poisoning. Essex Coroner Caroline Beasley-Murray recorded an open verdict.
