HUGE crowds packed Canvey's Park Lane ground as some of the great names of yesteryear from West Ham United came to the island.

An attendance around the 2,400 mark saw Canvey's own 'Blast from the Past' line-up take on Irons' 'Class of 86' - the team that came closest to winning the league championship for the Upton Park club when they finished third in the 1985/6 season.

In a flurry of goals the visitors triumphed 6-5 with Frank McAvennie and Paul Goddard both grabbing braces for Hammers as Steve Whitton and Anthony Gale added single strikes.

Canvey's goals came from Billy Heale (2), Southend United boss Steve Tilson, Eddie Carrick and Simon Liddle and three keen fans, Tim Bear, Stuart Crane and Kieron Heines, paid over £700 between them in an auction for the right to play 30 minutes each in the big game.
