A company boss has told how he cheated death at the hands of a brick-hurling vandal.

How did I survive that? - Mick Haggerty examines the damage after the brick was dropped on to his car in the A12. Picture: TERRY WEEDEN (44843-1)

Mick Haggerty was returning from a business trip when a housebrick was dropped from an A12 bridge at Colchester.

It smashed through the sunroof of his £60,000 Audi 8 car, causing damage which he reckons will cost thousands of pounds to put right.

He said: "I was in the lefthand lane taking the main turn-off to Colchester and went under a bridge. Then it sounded like a grenade had exploded in the car.

"There was glass everywhere. I stopped in the safest place and had a look and then dialled 999."

The incident happened at 9pm on Monday, the eve of his 52nd birthday and two days before he was due to leave for a holiday on the Caribbean island of Tobago.

Mr Haggerty, who co-owns Lapsafe Products in London Road, Stanway, said: "It is a moronic thing for people to do. Another half-inch and I would not be talking to you today."

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 01206 762212.
