The head of Tendring's police force has warned people not to take the law into their own hands.
A 59-year-old Jaywick resident said she would lay traps to stop yobs riding Mini-Motos and motorbikes in the resort.
Pauline Aldridge, of Broome Way, said she had already confronted the nuisance youths with a rake.
Residents at last night's police and community consultation group meeting at Jaywick Resource Centre gave Mrs Aldridge a rousing round of applause for her actions.
But Chief Supt Dave Hudson urged residents not to turn to vigilantism.
Mrs Aldridge said: "I saw two little girls get knocked over when one of these bikes raced past. "The girls' mum and dad said they wouldn't be visiting Jaywick again.
"We are getting no response from the police so I will take the law into my own hands."
Chief Supt Hudson said the applause for Mrs Aldridge caused him concern and he urged people not to take the law into their own hands.
