Vandals poured liquid through the letterbox of a family home.
They struck on Sunday at a house in Abdy Avenue, Dovercourt, as four children and two adults were inside.
A liquid, believed to be turpentine, had been poured inside the building and destroyed the letterbox and carpet.
The mother, who did not want to be named, said the family was "living in fear" after the attack.
"We can't sleep - I just want to know my kids are safe," she said.
"It was our wedding anniversary and this was not a very nice gift.
"I've got no carpet left and I'm standing on the floorboards."
The incident happened between 10pm and 11.50pm. Any witnesses should contact PC Rob Cubberley at Harwich police station on 01255 241312.
