The man was hurt while he was standing at a cash machine in a busy Greenstead shopping centre at 3pm yesterday, just as schoolchildren were returning home.

Shocked pensioner Fred Spinks said he heard a dispute outside Forbuoys newsagent in Hunwicke Road, Colchester.

The 68-year-old said: "It was to do with the cash machine.

"There was an argument, then all of a sudden there was a scream and matey was on the floor."

A murder probe was launched after the man, who is believed to be in his 20s, was rushed to hospital by ambulance. He died from a neck wound.

Police later arrested a 31-year-old man and a 36-year-old man on suspicion of murder.

They also arrested a 25-year-old woman on suspicion of assisting an offender.

All three are from Colchester and were being interviewed today.

Colchester police today appealed for witnesses to the incident to ring them on 01206 762212.
