VICTIMS of the New Orleans disasters were remembered as owners of classic American cars drove up and down Southend seafront to raise money for the survivors.

Seafront residents, who are more used to loud music, modified Ford Fiestas and Vauxhall Corsas, were treated to a much more spectacular show.

More than 60 classic American cars rolled along the seafront including dozens of gleaming Cadillacs.

The procession started in Eastern Perimeter Road near to Southend Airport before heading through Southend and down to the seafront where they were cheered on by everyone they passed.

Organiser Mark Bartlett said he became interested in American cars because of his love of all things American.

Mark, who drives a Chevrolet Blazer, said: "We had a lovely day for it and it was a fantastic atmosphere for everyone.

"We have been doing these meetings every month because a lot of organised shows are too expensive and are just ripping off the scene."

The group also had a barbecue and a raffle to raise money for the flood appeal in America - all the money raised will be doubled by fastfood chain McDonalds.
