Although living within a few minutes' walk of Manningtree High School, Joshua Redding-Bays, 11, has been told he must attend Thomas, Lord Audley School (TLA), Colchester.

A spokesman for Essex County Council said: "There are no places at Manningtree and we have arranged transport for Joshua, but his mother is now suggesting other schools."

Tracey-Anne Beckett of Gainsborough Drive, Lawford, said: "Yes, they have offered bus and train passes but it would mean him leaving home at 6.30am and not getting back until 6pm.

"In winter he would be going out and returning in the dark and would have to cross the busy A137 three times to get a bus or negotiate the Lawford roundabout to get to the station."

Mrs Beckett explained the problem had arisen because at the time when she should have applied for Joshua to go to Manningtree High, she was in hospital and the enrolment was overlooked.
