A freak downpour put Halstead and White Colne on flood alert, with drains unable to cope with the deluge.

Shops in Halstead High Street were in danger of flooding as the rainwaters rose.

Luckily the level of the River Colne in the town had already been lowered to carry out engineering work along the causeway.

However, a ceiling at the Premier Travel Agency shop in the High Street collapsed in the torrential rain.

A fire crew was sent to deal with the incident.

Kings Road was also shut for several hours after a watermain burst on Sunday morning. The Colnes were also hit by the storm which struck just after 1pm on Saturday.

Cars struggled to negotiate Station Road which was turned into a river of fast-flowing water.

One vehicle suffered a blow-out after hitting a manhole cover which had been forced out of the road by the pressure of water in Church Hill.
