A driver was fighting for his life today after he was crushed by his car which landed on him when he was thrown free from the vehicle.

The 23-year-old is in a critical condition in hospital following the accident in Clacton.

The driver, who has not been named but comes from the town, was taken to Colchester General Hospital by ambulance and then transferred to Oldchurch Hospital, Romford, which specialises in head injuries.

Firefighters used airbags and a winch to free the man, who was trapped under the Ford Escort car in the car park of the Royal Mail sorting depot in Oxford Road.

It was the only vehicle involved in the accident at 1.40am on Saturday.
