The fight is on to raise awareness of the invisible killer.

Tendring Primary Care Trust is throwing its weight behind a new NHS campaign urging smokers to give up.

It addresses the issue of smoking in the home environment and highlights the fact that passive smoking kills.

Sue White, of Tendring and Colchester Stop Smoking Support Service, said the initiative was particularly timely as the service had noticed a significant increase in the number of smokers wanting to give up as a result of pressure from, or fears of, family members who do not have the habit.

"Perhaps it shows that the message about passive smoking is hitting home," she said.

The service, launched in 2003, is estimated to have saved at least 600 lives.
