A fast-food restaurant in Colchester was forced to close after a deep fat frier caught fire.

Two fire crews were called to the McDonald's restaurant in the town's Cowdray Avenue shortly after 7.15pm on Saturday after staff reported the fire.

The restaurant was cleared of about 15 customers while firefighters tackled the fire with dry powder chemicals.

No-one was injured during the incident but the restaurant was shut for about two hours.

The cause of the fire is being looked at but it is thought an electrical fault was responsible.
