Kevin Watson has expressed his disappointment and frustration at being dropped to the bench.
The midfielder, who missed just two games last season, was relegated from Colchester United boss Phil Parkinson's starting line-up against Barnsley for the first time in his U's career.
"I'm very disappointed," said Watson, who did not even step on to the field in Saturday's 1-0 win over the Tykes.
"However, at the end of the day, there is nothing I can do about it. The manager picks the team and you have to get on with it.
"I'm not happy about it, I have no fitness problems, but I understand you can't get everyone in the team. There are only 11 starting places."
Watson, who played in the U's reserves 1-0 win over Leyton Orient, had started in the two other games of the season with a 4-5-1 formation accomodating the former Reading man along with Neil Danns and Kem Izzet.
However, after a 2-1 defeat at Gillingham and a 2-1 home defeat to Swansea City, Parkinson made his changes and the resulting reshuffle of his pack saw Watson warming the bench as Danns and Izzet worked alone in the centre of the midfield in a 4-4-2 line-up.
