It is a very deflating start to the season for Colchester United.
New signings, a strong finish to the last campaign and a solid pre-season had suggested that Phil Parkinson's charges would fire out of the traps and grab the glory on Saturday. However, it was not to be at Gillingham.
And, as much as Parkinson would have loved to have been walking into training today to face a group of players ready to get stuck into the next game against Swansea City at Layer Road tomorrow night, the U's boss will now have to lift his side to get over the bitter disappointment on the opening day.
The game was there on a plate for the U's.
Parkinson's new-look 4-5-1 formation, with the lofty Chris Iwelumo leading the charge, looked to be paying-off as Neil Danns finally put one of his well-crafted chances past Gills goalkeeper Jason Brown on 50 minutes.
