The bruised and battered victim of a hit and run accident today vowed he would get back on his bike.

Brian Lawrence, 61, needed more than 40 stitches for gashes to his head following the incident which left him bruised and bleeding on a busy Southend roundabout.

He was today recovering at home from his ordeal after being discharged from hospital.

Mr Lawrence, of Hamstel Road, Southend, said: "I am still very shaken by what has happened.

"I was on my way home from a physiotherapy session at Southend Hospital only to end up back there an hour later.

"I have been cycling for around 50 years and this is the first time anything like this has happened to me."

The driver of a dark-coloured car was today being hunted by police investigating the hit and run which happened at Porters Grange roundabout, close to its junction with Queensway and Southchurch Road at 10.20am yesterday.

Horrified motorist alerted paramedics after seeing Mr Lawrence thrown from his bike.
