Southend United's trialist striker Dominic Iorfa is hoping to shake-off his hamstring injury and play some part in Saturday's Third Division Roots Hall match against Scarborough.

Iorfa is in his second spell with the Shrimpers and was originally brought to Southend in 1994 by former manager Peter Taylor, who paid Peterborough United £15,000 for his services.

However, the 30-year-old, who has been playing non-league for Aylesbury, Billericay, Purfleet and Dover this season, has been given another chance to resurrect his Southend career - and he intends to take it.

"Alvin Martin has given me a two month contract to prove my worth to him and I aim to grab the chance with both hands and earn myself a permanent deal at Roots Hall," Iorfa explained.

"In my previous spell at the club I don't feel I was given a fair chance by the manager at the time, Ronnie Whelan, and the Southend fans certainly haven't seen the best of me yet.

"However, I have been given a second opportunity to prove myself to the people of Southend, who have always been very good to me, and I want to reward them by showing them what I can really do."

Since quitting Roots Hall two years ago Iorfa has played his football in the Scottish Premier League with Falkirk and on the other side of the world in China and Hong Kong.

However, the Nigerian International has never stopped following the Blues.

"My heart has always been with this club, even when I was thousands of miles away playing in China and Hong Kong," he said.

"I would always look out for Southend's results and in all honesty I never wanted to leave the club in the first place.

"But now I'm back among a squad of very good Southend players who are capable of doing well this season.

"The players at this club are more than capable of catapulting Southend back into the promotion race and I want to use my ability to help them achieve this goal.

"My pace can do a lot of damage to defences in this division and I'm sure that I can start firing home some of the chances the team has been failing to put away.

"I hope that, if I'm fit, I'll get the chance to have a crack at Scarborough on Saturday and this time show the Roots Hall fans what the real Dominic Iorfa can do."
