Nearly three-quarters of Basildon residents are scared to leave home because of the fear of crime, figures reveal.

More than 70 per cent questioned said they felt scared of being attacked on the housing estate where they lived.

Vange residents were the most fearful, with 45 per cent scared even inside or around their own homes.

The startling statistics are revealed in a survey of 3,000 residents across the district carried out by a host of local agencies including the police and Basildon Council.

It is part of an initiative to tackle crime in the district by pooling information and ideas from residents.

However, the survey shows most people's fear of crime is misplaced, according to Supt Denis Sheppard, of Basildon police.

More than 86 per cent felt unsafe in woodlands or parks at night, even though the chances of being attacked are small.

He said: "The survey shows that people's fear of crime is far greater than what it really is.

"It's something that's built up over the years. People watch Crimewatch UK and as they become more aware of crime they become more frightened.

"There are people saying that you cannot go out at night, but Basildon is not that dangerous a place to live.

"The chances of becoming a victim of crime are not as great as people believe."

Over the next month residents and councillors will have the chance to voice their fears in a series of public meetings.

Members of Wickford area committee have already highlighted their top priorities as graffiti, loitering youths and the design of housing estates.

Councillor Malcolm Buckley said: "Many people fear walking through some of the estates, particularly the Wick. It's very hostile to the pedestrian.

"We would welcome suggestions from the police on how to ensure that the area does not attract graffiti artists."

Mr Buckley's concerns will be among those addressed in a three-year strategy drawn up by local agencies to tackle crime. A draft strategy will be put together in February.

The survey has already highlighted key areas to be tackled, such as car crime, criminal damage, youth crime and fear of crime.

The council's west Basildon area committee will be held on Tuesday, with east Basildon held on Wednesday, Billericay on Thursday and the community and leisure committee on Tuesday January 19.
