Disappointed panto-goers were turned away from a theatre after the show was cancelled at the eleventh hour.

The show at Colchester's Mercury Theatre was called off after it was discovered a section of plasterwork had fallen from the ceiling over the audience area.

Staff spent much of Wednesday telephoning ticket holders to tell them the news. Experts were today called in to try and repair the problem.

Yesterday's performances of the highly-successful Christmas run of Cinderella were also cancelled.

But Mercury spokesman Philip Bray said "all possible action" was being taken to ensure the remaining scheduled performances, due to end on January 17, go ahead as planned.

Mr Bray said: "At all times we have to ensure the safety of everyone entering the Mercury Theatre. We have to be satisfied that there is no risk whatsoever of further problems and all measures are being taken to ensure this."

As theatre-goers arrived last night, the show's Dame, Peter Shorey, and other cast members explained the situation and handed out free drinks and posters.

People with tickets for Wednesday and yesterday have been advised to contact the Mercury's box office on 01206 573948 to obtain seats for alternative performances or for a full refund.
