Residents in Maylandsea fear rats are infesting a former village post office in a residential area.

Some also fear the building in Imperial Avenue which was sold at auction two months ago may fall down. Now residents are calling for action to clear the site up.

"Nothing seems to be getting done," said resident, Colin Savino. "The building has been empty for three or four years. Now the problem with vermin is the last straw."

'Fred' Migues of The Chip Inn which is nearby is considering seeking legal advice after having to call in pest control.

He believes the building should have been demolished a long time ago and neighbour, Kathleen Waldon fears that the building may collapse.

She said: "We want it tidied up. We keep our houses smart and we want our village smart."

Maldon District Council's environmental services manager, David Harper confirmed officers had taken pest control measures at the property. "We are still keeping it under review," he added.

Brian Cook, building control officer said although the building looked an eyesore, it had been propped up inside and last time it was checked it was not unsound.

He added officers will be taking another look at the property following residents' concerns.

Dedman Auctions confirmed the property was sold as development land in November to new owner Paul Miller, who also has the village's Freshway store.

Mr Miller was not available for comment.
