Rollerworld, Derby, was the venue on Sunday for the first of five meetings in the National Indoor In-line Skating Series 1998/99, which precede Brit-Skate '99, featuring the British Indoor Championships to be held at the NEC, Birmingham at the end of March.

Each skater had at least two races of varying distances, with the first six skaters in each final being awarded points: first - 10 points, second - six points, third - four points down to sixth - one point.

The girls' 6-9 years raced over five and three laps, with South Woodham being represented by Chanelle Moore and Victoria Hodgkinson.

Their overall positions and race results, out of five skaters, were: Chanelle first (1st and 3rd) and Victoria fifth (5th and 5th).

South Woodham had seven of the eight entrants in the boys' 6-9 years races, also over five and three laps.

Final positions were: Jonathan Wallis (first) (1st and 1st), Sam Morrison third (3rd and 4th), Billy Moore fourth (4th and 3rd), Chris Mizen fifth (5th and 6th), Ross Boddy (sixth (6th and 5th), Joe Wright (seventh (7th and 7th) and Robert Whiting eighth (8th and 8th).

In the girls 10-12 years races over eight and five laps, there was an all South Woodham field of five skaters.

The overall results were: first Chloe Penman (1st and 1st), second Sara Wallis (2nd and 2nd), third Emily Stone (4th and 3rd), fourth Lucy Boddy (3rd and fifth) and fifth Katie Stone (5th and 4th).

The boys 10-12 years races also over eight and five laps were initially held in heats,

South Woodham skaters who were eliminated were Kevin Scott (5th and 5th) and Mark Burton (6th and 6th). In the first heats, and Michael Mizen (6th and 6th) and Daniel Wheeler (7th and 7th) in the second heats.

From the two eight skater finals, the overall positions for the remaining South Woodham skaters were: Gary Moore third (3rd and 2nd), Adam Little seventh (7th and 7th) and Sam Vickers eighth (8th and 8th).

Katie Boddy raced in the girls 13-15 years races over 10 and 15 laps, coming second in both races and second overall out of two skaters.

In the boys 13-15 years group, South Woodham had three competitors out of the 14 entrants, racing over 15 and 10 laps.

Their final positions were: third A J Burton (3rd and 2nd), eighth Steve Outen (dnf and 7th) and Mark Smith also raced but did not finish both races.

South Woodham had just one Rat Race entry on the day; Joshua Morrison competing in the two races for 5-7 year boys, finishing third overall.

The next meeting in this indoor series will be held at Solar Skate in Norwich on Sunday.
