Maldon 'B' showed just what a strong squad of players they have in division three of the Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League with a convincing 9-1 win over Danbury 'D'.

Without leading player Barry Mays, Maldon might have expected to struggle slightly but this was not the case with Brian Riedling and Richie Hughes both turning in unbeaten performances.

Herbie Smith carried the flag for the losers with a win over John Batchford and he also gave an excellent account of himself against both Riedling and Hughes.

Maldon's lead at the top of the table was strengthened when second-placed Danbury 'E' fell 7-3 to ECC 'G'.

Nicky Reece-Ford excelled for Danbury with a victory over Haffied, while Baddow Village 'C's Duncan Elloy took all his singles but it only earned them a draw against struggling OCs 'B'.

In division four, Maldon 'C' recorded their first win of the season, over Writtle 'C', with Barry Willsher doing the damage with an excellent hat-trick of single's successes.

However, it was a closely-fought match and it was left to Peter Orriss to complete a 6-4 Maldon victory with a deuce-in-the-third success over Barry Lummis in the last game.

OCs 'C' resoundingly beat Baddow Village 'D' 9-1, OCs' Robbie Burton, Ashton Parker and Roy Sleet in fine form.

Hatfield Peverel 'B' lost 6-4 to an inspired ECC 'J' for whom Jeff Lewington and Neil Thompson both won twice to overturn a full house from Guy McKenzie, while fourth-in-the-table ECC 'K' lost 6-4 to Danbury 'G'.

Matthew Brown led division six leaders Writtle 'E' to a crucial win over fourth-placed Maldon Borough with three singles' successes, and Baddow Village 'F' overcame ECC 'P' 6-4, despite the efforts of Burnham League President Tom Hales who was unbeaten for ECC.

Other results: Division One: Danbury 'B' 6, Billericay 4; Hatfield Peverel 'A' 0', ECC 'A' 10; ECC 'B' 9, Baddow Village 'A' 1. Division Seven: Hatfield Peverel 7, Baddow Village 'H' 3.
