Troubled Southend nightclub, Club Art has been saved from the brink of closure - by the company that owned it in the First place.

Bosses of new owners Pemberton Group PLC were today at the Elmer Approach Club finalising details of the £1 million buyout, which will see the venue completely re-vamped.

The group incorporates First Continental, which passed the club into administration along with its other venues across the south east in 1997.

Today Pemberton spokesman Marios Georgallides said he had big plans for the club, but was remaining tight-lipped about them.

He said: "Workmen are in here as we speak stripping the club down and it will be opened with a completely new decor by spring. We are building it with Southend in mind."
