Police are appealing for witnesses after a man armed with a handgun raided a bank in Writtle near Chelmsford.
An Essex Police spokesman said the armed robber walked into Barclays Bank in Lodge Road at around 2.40pm on Tuesday and demanded money from staff.
The suspect, who was wearing a stocking over his head, departed with a quantity of cash and escaped on foot, heading in the direction of Paradise Road, although officers believe he may have had a car nearby.
The robber has been described as white, about 5ft 8ins tall, in his late 20s, and of stocky build. He had short dark hair with a receding hairline, and was wearing a beige jumper and blue jeans.
No shots were fired during the robbery and staff at the bank were left shocked but unhurt.
Anyone with information about the theft has been asked to contact CID officers at Chelmsford on 01245 491212 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111
