Teenage thieves in Colchester have been snatching purses in broad daylight.

Shoppers are being warned to be on their guard after two girl purse snatchers struck twice in the town centre.

The teenagers stole a handbag and a purse from women shoppers in two separate incidents yesterday.

One woman had her bag containing £55 and other items snatched while she was shopping at Sainsbury's supermarket in Priory Walk.

In the second incident, an elderly woman had her purse containing £10 taken from her while she was at the Barnardo's charity shop in High Street.

Police would like to hear from any witnesses to the incidents, which are being linked. The descriptions of the girls involved were similar.

Both were aged between 16 and 18 and had dark shoulder-length hair. One was 5ft 8in tall and wore a short, dark purple coat. The second was 5ft 4in and wore a long black skirt. One of the girls was carrying a black bag.

Det Sgt Roy Clark warned shoppers to make sure their bags and purses were secure at all times.

He said: "People should make sure they keep hold of their bags and that they are zipped up to stop anyone getting at their purses."
