A 41-year-old Chelmsford man died from an overdose because he was hoarding prescribed drugs to binge on once a week, an inquest heard.
Stephen Chapman was found dead by his wife at his home in Dorset Avenue in January. Mr Chapman, a former drug addict was taking the heroin substitute methadone as well as medication for clinical depression.
His wife Helen Connors told the court her husband would save some of his medication up for binges once a week.
A post mortem examination revealed an excessive amount of methadone and amitriptyline, tablets for depression, had caused Mr Chapman's death.
Essex Coroner Dr Malcolm Weir, recorded a verdict of accidental death. He said: "Tragically Stephen was in fact keeping some of his drugs and hoarding them. He died from a lethal cocktail. This is a very tragic accident."
