Essex star Peter Such spoke of his delight after receiving a shock recall to the England squad for the third Test against New Zealand.

The 35-year-old off-spinner has been overlooked by the selectors since his last appearance against Australia in Sydney during last winter's Ashes series.

And as he looked forward to the third Test which begins at Old Trafford on Thursday, Such said: "Hopefully my stay in the squad will be longer than the last time.

"You always believe you are good enough for the Test side and I was bowled over when Nasser Hussain phoned me to tell me I was in the squad.

"My ultimate goal has always been to establish myself in the Test squad and if I play I would love to do well enough to earn a place in this winter's touring squad to South Africa.

"Right now it's simply a case of wait and see and whether England go into Thursday's game with one spinner or two.

"I'll be giving it my best whatever they do, but I am only taking things one match at a time."

It will be Such's 11th Test appearance if he gets the nod.

Meanwhile injured skipper Hussain is still hoping to play despite a broken finger. If he does not play Surrey's Mark Butcher will lead the side.
