Plans for Maldon Town Regatta for traditional boats and fishing smacks are moving ahead.
The event on Saturday September 11 is reputed to be the earliest started on the East Coast dating from early 1700.
The event will be held in conjunction with the Old Gaffers Anniversary Rally and there will also be modern cruising boats from the Maldon Little Ship Club and various other sailing clubs along the River Blackwater,
Starting at West Mersea in the morning the races will finish at Maldon Hythe Quay early afternoon.
A new first class smack of a type not seen for 200 years is to have its naming ceremony at the prize giving on the Quay at around 5pm having been built over the last six months in a boatshed at Blackwater Marina in Maylandsea by the firm Traditional Charter.
A music festival will also run throughout the day attended by 'Shanty Jack from Humberside and a local group called Legacy planning modern and folk music.
The Queen's Head and Maldon Little Ship Club will have music in the evening.
