Brentwood & District Table Tennis League team manager Bill Wall and his five teams travelled to Peterborough to play in their annual Challenge Shield match on Sunday.
This prestigious challenge evoked table tennis of the highest order.
Bill's opposite number, Mick Willis, fielded five strong teams to face the holders of the Shield with his tactics nearly proving fruitful.
Brentwood's first team faced the powerful hitting of Weston and Gladden and in reply, the visitors had Mark England and captain Fred Dove being ably supported by Ray Bryant and Glen Johnson to score a forceful 8-2 victory after some attractive table tennis which was a credit to all the participating players.
Mick Willis and Colin Belcher led the home's second team into the fray against David Page, Mick Rigg, Andrew Halling and playing up for the first time, Karla Bryant.
The home team captain scored a creditable double to give his team more than an edge when taking their score to 8-2.
Bill Wall led his team of Paul Morris, making his debut. Reg Innes and Colin Clements. in determined fashion and while only dropping three games, Wall's team powered to a worthy 7-3 victory.
The hosts team of Veterans proved too strong for Brentwood and once again they carved out an 8-2 victory to put Peterborough 22-18 in the lead, which was short-lived however as Brentwood's team of Juniors proceeded to demolish their opposition.
Captain Karla Bryant, Neil Disley making his debut, along with Tony Halling and Michael Sheehan proceeded to produce the fireworks with the juniors producing a 9-1 victory in favour of Brentwood.
This ensured that Brentwood kept their hands on the Challenge Shield which they have won every year since the inception of the Challenge with the scoreline being 27-23 in favour of the visitors.
