Burnham Carnival is celebrating its 90th birthday this year with a brand new float for the carnival queen.

The carnival on Saturday begins at 11am in Burnham High Street and promises to be an action-packed day of fun for all the family.

In the morning a junior organisation competition will take place, in which youngsters from the Cubs, Brownies, Beavers, Red Cross and St John Ambulance will be given the task of building a birthday cake.

Following this, members of the emergency services will be taking part in a number of it's a knockout style contests.

Other displays throughout the day include Punch and Judy, gymnastics, stilt walkers and a Breeze radio roadshow.

Graham Torrie, publicist said: "This year will be extra special because it is our 90th anniversary year.

''We have a big birthday cake which will feature in the procession and it will also be the first time many of the people in Burnham will see the new float."

The day's activities will be completed with the illuminated procession at 7.30pm led by carnival queen Alison Payne, 15, and princesses, Megan Mullins, 9, and Stephanie Martin, 9, on the new float.

Joining the procession will be 80 floats from as far afield as Bexhill in Sussex.

There will also be the opportunity to win a three-piece suite or a holiday in Cornwall in the carnival draw.

Runners-up will win £100 and £50 cash prizes.

For the first time this year, the draw will take place on the same day.

The organisers are appealing for stewards to help out on the day, anyone interested should ring Graham Torrie on 01621 783424.
