Medical experts will be helping to dispose of drug users' needles and syringes as part of a new safety scheme.

Under the scheme, launched by Braintree Council, a team of medical professionals will be called in to arrange proper disposal of used syringes and needles, in a bid to protect residents from the risk of serious diseases, like HIV and hepatitis.

The project is a joint initiative between Braintree Council and the North East Essex Drug and Alcohol Service (NEEDAS).

The council decided to take action over concerns the increasing amount of discarded needles used by addicts.

A helpline number has been set up to try and pinpoint the location of used needles.

Callers will be urged not to touch the needle but to give its whereabouts. A medical expert will then arrange for it to be collected and safely disposed of.

Special collection bins are also being placed at high profile sites.

Leaflets are due to be sent out to all residents in the district next month advising them of the measures.

If anyone finds a used needle they can contact the carecall number on 01376 557763.
