Eight-year-old Steven Sewell from Great Dunmow became East Anglian champion for his age group on Sunday at the Peterborough Raceway after having easily won his three motos.

The eight rider final was a close fought race with a visiting rider just crossing the line first but Steven took the title and the trophy as the first regional rider home.

Matthew Sewell rode with tremendous determination all afternoon and with two second places and a third in the motos looked set for a good result in the final in which he finished a worthy second.

There were 10 Braintree BMX Club riders in the event with Katie Roberts having to compete with girls up to two years older and she had to settle for the eighth place in all her races.

Brother Jonathan managed a seventh and two fifths in the heats but rode harder in the final to take a good fourth place.

Kelvin Vant and Martin Simmons were battling against each other in the eleven-years-old races amongst a competitive field with Kelvin taking a fourth, sixth and a fifth and Martin a fifth and sixth..

In their final both rode extremely well and it was Martin who managed to hold on to take fourth place with Kelvin just behind him.

Making his competition debut at a meeting outside his home track, Tim Machin, from Braintree, enjoyed his day with a sixth and two fifths in the motos and a creditable fifth in the 14-year-olds "B" final.

Racing in separate motors in the age 15 class, Ryan Everitt and Alex Humphrey were looking for some good results with Ryan making it into three second places whilst Alex took a third in the first moto then rode to excellent victories in the other two races. A bad gate start for Alex in the final and a slight injury to Ryan set them both back with Alex finishing sixth and Ryan just behind him.

Also in superb form was 17-year-old Dean Gray who rode magnificently to take third, first and second in his three heats and a storming finish in the final secured him a well earned fourth place.

The BMX riders will be in action again this Saturday at a club meeting starting at 2pm on their own track.
