A network of crimebusting cameras could be extended in a bid to create a crime-free zone.

Plans are in the pipleine to boost the level of CCTV cameras in Witham.

The plan aims to stamp out crime and nuisance behaviour by extending the current close circuit television system from the town centre into the Freebournes business park.

The next step would then be to consult with residents to set up the network in other areas such as the Grove estate.

It is hoped a partnership between businesses on the industrial estate, the town council and the police would help to make the plan a reality.

To get it up and running, the businesses are being asked to pledge financial support to help the council pay for the first phase of the network.

The police will then carry out a survey to see how many cameras are needed and where they should be sited.

Witham mayor Tom Hewitt said: "It is a very promising project which has generated a lot of enthusiasm. It should act as a considerable deterrent and will give residents who are concerned by nuisance problems a greater peace of mind.

"A safer environment would also attract more business to the town."

Witham's Crime Prevention Officer, PC Mick Hall, said: "The current town centre scheme is a success in cutting down both anti-social behaviour and crime. It would obviously be desirable to extend it onto the industrial estate."
