Thurrock Council is joining forces with Safeway supermarket to offer free safety checks for children's car seats.
Latest figures show 70 per cent of child seats are not fitted properly, but tomorrow anyone can go along to the Chafford Hundred store to have their seats checked between 10am and 3pm.
Denise Langan, the council's road safety officer, said: "It's important that people use correctly-fitted child car seats. That's why I am encouraging all parents to come and have a free safety check on their child's car seat.
"An unrestrained child can be killed by being thrown forward at speeds as low as 5mph.
"Correctly fitted car seats could have prevented two in three child deaths or serious injuries to unrestrained children."
