Southend poets are getting ready for National Poetry Day.

The celebrations on Thursday, October 7, will be taking place at the Central Library on the town's Victoria Avenue and the Railway Hotel, Clifftown Road.

The Southend Poetry Group will be giving readings at the library between 1pm and 3pm.

In the evening, Pier Pressure, who publish Southend Poetry for the Millennium, the Southend Poetry Group and folk duo Pier Talk will present a session of poetry and song at the hotel from 8pm.

The town's poetry group were behind Southend Poetry 99, the 15th volume produced by the group.

Chairman Adrian Green said: "The standard of work and consistency over the years is one of the reasons for the growing reputation of local writers."

The readings at the library are free and tickets for the evening performances can be obtained at the hotel door.
