Artist Martine Norman says her home town of Witham has been the inspiration for much of her work. Reporter CLARE BERRETT met Martine to find out more about her.

Martine Norman was born in Billericay, but has lived in Witham since 1970 and it is Essex towns like these that have been the inspiration for much of her work.

Martine, who recently held an exhibition called Contemplation at the Holy Family and All Saints Church in Witham, said she is constantly thinking of new ideas for her paintings.

"Wherever I am or whatever I am doing I am always thinking of how it would look as a painting. Much of my work is inspired by local places, such as the old forge on Chipping Hill, but also from all over the world.

"It has been a great privilege to find beauty in Essex, as well as around this country, yet also to have gained experience worldwide.

''Now is an opportunity to share contemplation of a wonderful world beyond artificial technology," said Martine, a former teacher.

Martine said that whenever she holds an exhibition it is always like the first one for her. Keeping the excitement going is very important when you are an artist.

"An artist has to be sensitive, strong and perceptive. I really don't know what I would do if I gave up painting. To be a good artist, you have to have dedication; it's very important. To be perfectly honest, painting is my life and I love everything about it," she said.

Martine, who has also written a book called It's a Tutor's Life , has exhibited in London and Paris, as well as various other UK outlets and undertakes commissioned work.

This dolls house, right, was made by Martine's grandfather Arthur and is a great attraction at all of her exhibitions
