A Mothers' Union group is set to close at the end of this year - despite celebrating its centenary.

Membership of the branch at St Mary's Church, in Benfleet, has dwindled with many regulars now too elderly to play an active part. Unless the group can attract new blood it could wind up.

The news comes as members prepare to celebrate the club's 100th birthday with a special church service and buffet next month.

Branch leader Hazel Russell said: "It is a great shame this is happening in our centenary year but we felt we should still hold the celebration for all the people who have been members and worked hard over the years."

Hazel said the main problem in attracting new members was that the traditional role of the Mothers' Union was no longer needed.

Branches were originally set up through local churches to help poorer families - particularly mothers - cope with their children. But many mums now go out to work as their youngsters grow up and no longer need the help and support the Union once supplied.

The main role of the organisation today is to provide a social activity and fund raise for good causes such as disadvantaged families.

Hazel said: "It's a different world than when the branch began and times have changed. The Mothers' Union is trying to change with it but change takes time.

"We have an image problem and it is very difficult to get new young members. Most of ours are now elderly and quite a lot are becoming infirm and can't come to our meetings. It looks as if we will have to close down at the end of the year."

Other branches, including Canvey and St Peter's in Thundersley, are also suffering from falling membership.

The Benfleet group's celebrations will be on Tuesday, September 5 and begin with a service at St Mary's at 11am. A buffet will take place at the nearby Anchor Inn, in Essex Way. To join the Union call Hazel on 01268 755900.
