Celebrity couple Posh and Becks could be about to dip into their millions to buy their own private island - near Maldon.

Spice Girl Victoria Beckham and her Manchester United star hubby David could well afford to buy their own tropical paradise, but instead they have reportedly shown an interest in Osea Island in the Blackwater Estuary.

The private island - cut off from the mainland for 16 hours a day - comes with a hefty £6 million price tag.

The king and queen of showbiz have been rumoured to be looking at the island for months, but Martin Cole, the son of owners of the island David and Hilary Cole, said he could not confirm the news.

He said: "We're a bit in the dark. I think the estate agent said something about it last week but I really don't know anything.

"About three people are quite interested in the island, but they remain anonymous. Everything is sorted out by the estate agents."

Posh and Becks are even said to have chartered a helicopter to get a good look at Osea Island from the air. They would have seen 360 acres of woodland, pasture and marshland, with its own sandy beaches along the coast.

The island is dominated by a 12-bedroom manor house - with plenty of room for the couple's his 'n' hers thrones, vast designer wardrobe and fleet of expensive cars.

The hideaway also has 26 other cottages, many used as holiday homes, and its own farm. The whole island has been designated a site of special scientific interest.

The multi-millionaire couple already own two huge homes - one in Manchester close to where David trains and plays, and the other, dubbed Beckingham Palace, near Sawbridgeworth on the Herts/Essex border.

Osea Island could prove the perfect private get-away for the country's most famous couple, and an ideal place to raise son Brooklyn.

The island was put on the market last June when retired industrialist Mr Cole decided to move somewhere smaller.

London-based estate agent Knight Frank is handling the sale.

Mr Cole, in his early 70s, and Mrs Cole, in her 60s, have lived on the island for almost 30 years.

About Osea Island

Osea island is linked to Heybridge by a Roman causeway which is flooded with water for eight out of every 12 hours. At times of bad weather it can be cut off all day.

The island was used as an arms depot by the Danes when they launched their successful invasion of Maldon from nearby Northey Island more than 1,000 years ago.

The Doomsday Book records that there had been serfs, fishermen and grazing sheep for centuries before that.

Frederick Charrington bought Osea Island in 1903 and set up two homes for alcoholics - one for down and outs and the other for wealthier drunks and a resident doctor.

Three kangaroos were imported to the island at the same time - which must have confused the alcoholics - along with emus, cockatoos and a pool for seals was built.

Osea was used as a naval base in the First World War, and by the Army during the Second World War.
