More than 200 campaigners - twice as many as before - were planning to picket a crucial meeting last night (Tuesday) to decide the future of Castle Point's sheltered housing wardens.
The borough's council chamber in Kiln Road, Thundersley, was due to be packed to the rafters by pensioners and their supporters, in a bid to persuade council bosses not to scrap the warden jobs.
The last time the issue was discussed by councillors on January 16, around 100 pensioners and supporters crammed into the council chamber.
They called on councillors to reject a proposal to scrap the service and also criticised an option to restrict or farm the service out to private contractors. Instead, they want wardens to be left as they are.
Council bosses have emphasised that no decisions will be taken until a comprehensive consultation is carried out with staff, residents and users.
Free transport - coach boss Stuart Kingston pledged to give the elderly residents a ride to the meeting
