Southend United boss David Webb axed established defenders Martyn Booty and Leo Roget against Kidderminster Harriers.

The Shrimpers chief preferred youngster David McSweeney to Booty at right-back and Carl Hutchings replaced Roget at centre-half.

Explaining his decisions, Webb said: "I've felt that David has been long overdue a run in the side and he is going to get it now.

"As for Leo, there's a few things that happened with him on the pitch, which are my view of things.

"I want to head onwards and upwards and look at the players who are the future of the club."

Meanwhile, Blues will play the first leg of their LDV Vans Trophy area final against Brentford at Roots Hall on Tuesday, March 13. The return at Griffin Park is on Tuesday, March 20. Both games kick-off at 7.45pm.

Southend's reserves took on Crystal Palace at Boots and Laces today, kick-off 2pm.
